2007 Global Studies Grants
At the 2007 annual meeting of the Global Studies Foundation (GSF), six outstanding proposals were selected from dozens of applicants to receive the first Global Studies Grants.
With separate categories for students, faculty, and institutions, GSF’s grants promote the internationalization of education in the United States and encourage American students and faculty to have and share formative international experiences. Applicants in the three categories submitted proposals and supporting documentation in January, which were reviewed by GSF’s Grants Committee. Selection criteria included program merit and outreach potential, as well as academic and professional credentials and strategically important areas and languages. After careful consideration of each proposal, the Grants Committee identified and prioritized the most promising proposals in each category, which were then reviewed and evaluated by GSF’s Board of Directors.
The applicant pool was particularly strong and diverse. Across the three categories, we received a total of 42 completed proposals from 16 states, from all types of institutions (public, private, and charter) and different educational levels (high schools, colleges, and graduate schools). Given the high quality of this applicant pool and the opportunity to make a splash with this first round of grants, GSF’s Board of Directors decided to award two grants per category this year for a total of six grants in 2007.
GSF’s first Global Studies Grants recipients include students and educators at both secondary and post-secondary levels in public and private institutions. They come from five states: California, Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Their proposals focus on global education and service in countries such as China, Chile, Egypt, Niger, and Tanzania. All six recipients share a clear commitment to global learning and propose programs to substantively advance international awareness and education in their own communities and beyond.
