GSF President, Dr. Chris Harth, presents on "glocal" studies at National Council for Geographic Education

During the last week of September, GSF President, Dr. Chris Harth, traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico to present with a multi-divisional team from St. Andrew's Episcopal School at the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education.
The team gave a joint presentation on “Geographic Literacy and ‘Glocal’ Studies,” which provided an overview of the school’s recent efforts to internationalize and to promote both geographic competence and “glocal” citizenship. Dr. Harth, who also serves as Director of Global Studies and World Languages at St. Andrew’s, provided an overview of these school-wide initiatives, with Ann Marshall detailing efforts in the Lower School, Matthew Ellefson Middle School programs, and Donna Patrick Upper School steps, including information about the school’s new class in AP Human Geography. At present, St. Andrew’s is one of only two schools in Mississippi to offer the class.
In addition to presenting at the conference, the team also attended numerous seminars, lectures, and workshops pertaining to geographic education, on topics ranging from “Citizenship in the Twenty-First Century” and “Research-Based Methodologies for Teaching Geography” to “Neuroscience and Geographic Education” and “Assessments in K-12 Geography,” from “Climate Change in Australia” and “Blogging from the Field” to “Persuasive Maps” and “Language Learning and Geography.” They also were able to experience first-hand Puerto Rico as a “cultural crossroads,” the theme of the conference, and to obtain rich and relevant information and resources to share with their classes, colleagues, and other community members.
For more information about these topics, St. Andrew’s multi-faceted on-campus and off-campus initiatives, or the presentation, please contact Dr. Harth.
