GSF awards third round of Global Studies Grants for students, faculty, and institutions


As part of its ongoing effort to actively promote international education and the study of global affairs, the Global Studies Foundation recently awarded its third round of Global Studies Grants.

 

Offered annually in three separate categories -- for students, faculty, and institutions -- these grants are designed to encourage experiential learning abroad and the internationalization of education.  As in 2007 and 2008, the applicant pool in all three categories was strong and diverse.  Dozens of interesting and promising proposals were received from all over the country and a wide range of institutions.   

 

After carefully reviewing the proposals, we are pleased to announce the 2009 recipients of the Global Studies Grants:

 

 

Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad

 

Ms. Jayne Lee

Global and International Studies Program

University of California Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA

 

Destination: Egypt

Proposal: “Research on Gender and Development in North Africa and the Middle East”

 

Summary: Developing Arabic language skills while studying gender and development at the American University of Cairo and working on fair trade with marginalized women

 

 

Global Studies Grant for Faculty Travel and Professional Development

 

Dr. Elizabeth Oglesby

Assistant Professor of Geography and Latin American Studies

University of Arizona

Tucson, AZ

 

Destination: Guatemala

Proposal: “Developing Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Central America”

 

Summary: Travel to Guatemala to develop authentic undergraduate research opportunities in conjunction with a new partnership with the Center for Mesoamerican Research in Antigua

 

 

Global Studies Grant for Institutional Program Development

 

California Colleges for International Education

Oakland, CA

 

Proposal: “Engaging Faculty and Students with an International Negotiations Module Project”   

 

Summary: Promoting the continued internationalization of a consortium of 84 community colleges in California by offering a competitive grants program for faculty development and training, particularly associated with preparing for web-based international negotiations simulations involving real-world issues (the ICONS project developed and maintained by the University of Maryland)

 

 

We will post more details about these award-winning proposals in the coming months and look forward to sharing reports about their programs and experiences.
