GSF President, Dr. Chris Harth, presents on "glocal" education at National Association of Independent Schools
For the second year in a row, Dr. Chris Harth, who serves as the President of the Global Studies Foundation and the Director of Global Studies and World Languages at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School (MS), presented at the annual conference of the National Association of Independent Schools on the changing contexts of PK-16+ education and the need for schools and educators to adapt as expeditiously as possible.
This year, Dr. Harth presented “Going ‘Glocal’: Preparing Young Citizens for their Futures” as part of a three-hour workshop on “Going Global in Grades K-8.” Other presenters in the workshop included Mary-Katherine Menikheim, Marin Country Day (CA); Susan Hopper, St. John's Episcopal School (TX); Susan Grodman, Derryfield School (NH); and Ioana Suciu Wheeler, NAIS (DC).
Drawing on his background in geopolitics and international relations, Dr. Harth first analyzed the emergent contexts -- local through global -- including ongoing demographic, economic, ecological, technological, and political shifts. To help orient the process of educational adaptation, Dr. Harth introduced the notion of “glocal” citizenship, which best captures the multiple layers of identity and community that characterize the challenges and opportunities we face – with an emphasis on local, state, national, and global levels.
Dr. Harth concluded with a discussion of the wide range of activities and programs at St. Andrew’s that are oriented around this “glocal” notion, including curriculum, travel, language learning, collaboration, and service, as well as marketing.
